The Nature Club organized an excursion to Sanjay Gandhi National Park on the 20th of January, 2024. Departing at 7:00 AM, the members embarked on a journey filled with excitement and anticipation.
Upon arrival at the Park, the group embarked on the Shillonda trail, a 1.5 km path renowned for its rich biodiversity. The trail provided an opportunity to appreciate the park’s natural beauty and diverse plant life.
While on the trail, the students spotted a Pagoda ant nest, a termitarium and a few creatures like the scorpion and Bark Mantis. The guide assisted the students in identifying leopard scratch marks on the trees. Students were also amused by the meticulous engineering used in structuring the ant hill.
Next, the group proceeded to the iconic Kanheri Caves, ancient Buddhist learning centre and pilgrimage site. Carved into massive basaltic rock mountains, the caves showcased intricate sculptures and architectural marvels. Highlights included:
First Cave (Vihara): A Buddhist monastery with two levels, although construction remained incomplete due to the challenges posed by the hard basaltic rock.
Second Cave: This cave, located to the right of the first one, featured three dagobas, with two intact and one broken.
Third Cave: Arguably the most significant cave in the series, it housed two Buddha statues and a four-lion pillar, surrounded by 34 pillars.
After exploring the caves, the group enjoyed a simple thali lunch at an open ground within the park, replenishing their energy for the upcoming activities.
The highlight of the day was the exhilarating tiger safari, where members had the thrilling opportunity to observe lions and tigers from a close distance, albeit safely behind cages. The experience left a lasting impression on everyone, combining excitement with a sense of awe at the majestic creatures.
Following the safari, the group visited the park’s education centre, where they gained insights into the diverse wildlife through models and informative videos. This educational session deepened their understanding and appreciation of the park’s conservation efforts.
With hearts full of gratitude towards the guides, the group boarded the bus for the journey back to school.
Overall, the excursion to Sanjay Gandhi National Park was a resounding success, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a renewed connection to nature.
