The Under 16 football team from St Mary’s ICSE participated in the 31st All Maharashtra Anglo Indian Inter School Football Tournament held at Barnes School and Junior College, Deolali from 25th Aug to 31st Aug 2019.
The St. Mary’s team had started their preparation a month in advance for this prestigious tournament under the proficient guidance of our Head Coach Mr. Keenan Oliver.
The team’s departure was on 25th August 2019, from our premises. Upon their arrival at Deolali, they were provided with dormitory facilities.
During the opening ceremony held on 26th August 2019, every team member was introduced to the Principal and his team along with all the other participating schools.
Our team had to play a round robin format along with St. Peter’s-Mumbai, The Bishop’s School – Undri, Campion School – Mumbai and Bombay Scottish School – Powai (Mumbai).
We opened our tournament with a 3-0 win against last year’s Runners up St Peter’s- Mumbai (Goal Scorers _ Arjun Jalan, Joshua Mendes, Raadnya Apte)
On the second day, our team had to play a double header against defending champions, The Bishop’s School – Undri, against whom we lost 0-1.
Post the loss, Coach Keenan put on his thinking cap and strategized for the 2nd match of the day against Campion School. Due to the re-alignment of the playing formation, we were victorious, with a score of 1-0 (Raadnya Apte scoring the only goal of the match.)
The last game of the league was against Bombay Scottish – Powai, Mumbai and we came out winners 1-0 (Joshua Mendes being the goal scorer).
At the end of the league stage we topped the table and were to play Bombay Scottish – Powai in the 1st Semi Final.
Our boys were all geared up for the semifinal and wanted to up their game and qualify for the Finals.
Arya Agicha scored the match winning goal in the highly contested match against Bombay Scottish – Powai.
Finally, after a wait of nearly two decades, our team managed to enter the Finals of the All Maharashtra Anglo Indian Football Tournament where we were to clash with Campion School.
The Campion School began in an electrified pace with both teams trying to gain an upper hand and control over the game. Our team was continuously raiding the opponent’s half with superb ball play but were faltering in putting the ball in the back of the net.
During the half time break, Coach Keenan and Mr. Tiwari’s strong pep talk built up confidence which helped the team come out stronger in the 2nd half.
Observing the aggressive approach of our team, Campion School went into a defensive mode of play and this helped us to penetrate deeper into the opponent side.
As the game was heading towards extra time, Raadnya Apte from a defensive lapse volleyed the ball towards the goal which was parried by the goalkeeper and Arjun Jalan pounced on the rebound and slotted the ball home, sending all the parents in the stands into a deafening roar of
“ Mary Mary Mary – ISC”
Jaden Colaco our team captain and charismatic centre back was adjudged “Player of the Tournament”.
Finally, after a long wait, St. Mary’s ICSE football team had emerged winners on the biggest platform of their sporting careers.
