St Mary’s I.C.S.E. hosted the inaugural inter-school Mathematics event –[MATRIX]
on Saturday, 8th September, 2018. The objective of this event was to create in our students an interest and love for the subject by promoting an approach which was lively and full of fun! This approach eliminates any fear or negative attitudes that students usually associate with Mathematics. We plan to continue with this activity on a regular basis.
This event was hosted with the direction and guidance of our Principal Rev. Fr. Dr. Francis Swamy, s.j and our Secondary Supervisor, Ms. Clementine Monteiro together with the Mathematics teacher, Mr. Sabin Castelino.
Our chief guest for the occasion was Professor Aditya Garg, a popular professor of Mathematics from St Xavier’s College – Mumbai and a graduate from the IIT – Delhi.
While inaugurating the event, he remarked, “It is a great pleasure for me to see Mathematics being taken to the level of application and the phobia of mathematics being driven away in this manner.”
Seven ICSE schools from Mumbai actively participated in the event including our school, viz. Campion School, Bombay Scottish Powai, Villa Theresa School, Green Lawns, Diamond Jubilee High School, Bombay Scottish Mahim and St Mary’s ICSE.
In the first three rounds of the competition the students were engaged in the thought process which simultaneously exercised a lot of fun. They challenged each other in Check-Math (Chess and Maths), Finding Pi (Treasure hunt with Maths), and Mathopoly (Monopoly with Maths).
The students of St Mary’s ICSE constituted the organizing committee and prepared a total of 300 questions for the competition and ensured all the events were executed without any disruption and delay. They ushered in the games and guided the participants in a very professional manner and kept the participants busy and lively so that everyone enjoyed to the maximum.
The Finale was a thrill ride known as ‘INQUIZITIVE’ which was an auction Quiz. This was the headliner and all the points secured in the previous games were included at this stage as participants bought the questions using the accumulated points and then progressed with the game.
After all the scramble – twists and turns, ups and downs, CAMPION SCHOOL finished [MATRIX] as champions – 2018 with just a tie-breaker, forcing BOMBAY SCOTTISH – MAHIM to the second position.
As the champions from CAMPION SCHOOL were felicitated on the stage, the young MATHEMATICIANS left with a sense of wonder fully enriched and satisfied with the adventure of Mathematics.
